A PENSIONER from the North-East has won bronze in a 10km road race at the World Veterans Championships in New Zealand at the weekend.

Jim Caddy, 79, from Redcar, ran in the 75-80 age group and recorded 57 minutes, eight minutes behind Raymond Langmead of New Zealand and Karel Matzner of the Czech Republic.

The former ICI worker, who has a fitness treadmill in his sheltered accommodation at the Sir William Turner Almshouses in Redcar, was the only Briton in his age group to complete the course.

The Rotary Club of Guisborough and Great Ayton helped him with travel and accommodation. President Peter Sotheran said: "His time was only ten minutes slower than that of some competitors half his age."

In March, Jim won silver in the 1,500m and bronze in the 3,000m races in the World Veterans' Athletics Championships in Stuttgart.
