WEEDS are to be blitzed in the next few weeks to improve the look of east Cleveland.
The spraying, which started on Monday, is being carried out by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
Operators will use a systemic herbicide, which is absorbed through the foliage and transmitted to all parts of the weeds, including the roots, ensuring the weed is killed and preventing regrowth.
More pernicious broad-leafed weeds, such as docking, thistle and plantain may require more than one treatment and limited regrowth is likely to occur.
The herbicide provides no residual effect and will not prevent dormant or wind-blown seeds from germinating. Once treated, effects should become evident in five to ten days, dependent on weather conditions.
Treated weeds will be removed by the council's Clean and Green teams.
Councillor Barbara Harpham, cabinet member for environmental improvement, said: "This is a big and necessary operation as weed growth is particularly unsightly and needs attention. The work is another part of our new clean and green approach through area management."
