TWO gipsy sites in the region will undergo major refurbishment.
The sites in Darlington and Stanley, County Durham, have been given a total of almost £400,000 from the Gypsy Site Refurbishment Grant.
The Honeypot Lane site, in Darlington gets £312,210, which will enable the borough council to continue with the refurbishment it started when £367,127 was received from the fund last year.
The 45-pitch site is being provided with 14 new amenity blocks with kitchen, shower, toilet and storage space. The joint project by Darlington council, Sure Start and the Primary Care Trust in Darlington will also see electricity and water supplies upgraded.
The £78,134 awarded to the Tower Road site, in Stanley, will enable the site's toilets to be linked to the main sewers.
The grants will meet 75 per cent of the costs, with local authorities funding the rest.
Last year, Durham County Council bid successfully for a similar grant for improvements to its Drum Lane site, in Chester-le-Street, which are almost complete.
