CELEBRATIONS for the Queen's birthday were in full swing in North Yorkshire yesterday with a banner flying for the first time and a 21-gun salute.
At Knaresborough Castle, the new banner of the Duchy of Lancaster, which owns the castle, flew to mark the Queen's 78th birthday.
A spokeswoman for Harrogate Museums and Arts, which runs Knaresborough Castle, said: "The Duchy of Lancaster said they had this new banner and that they would like it to be flown on special occasions, such as the Queen's birthday. It looks great."
In York's Museum Gardens, a firing party from 40 Regiment Royal Artillery, which is based in Topcliffe, Thirsk, fired a 21-gun royal salute at midday.
