All three junior clubs on the river Wear in Durham have had rowers selected to represent the region in the inter-regional regatta on Sunday, along with Queen Elizabeth's High School from Hexham and Yarm School.
The Amateur Rowing association divides the country into 12 regions, Durham being in the Northern Region, which extends from York up to the Scottish borders and over into Cumbria.
A team of 23 crews, involving 63 athletes, has been selected in the age range of 14 to 16 years, to compete against the other regions, at the Nation Water Sport Center in Nottingham, over a distance of 1500 meters.
Each event consists of two heats and two finals. The fastest six race off in the Grande final and the remaining six row in the Petite Final. Points are awarded for each crew's final position; all points being added to the team's overall score. The points total count towards the overall Regional Champion, the overall Girls Regional Champion and the overall Boys Regional Champion.
The Inter Regional Regatta is an chance for all the clubs in the region to join together, particularly the Durham clubs, who enjoy a very healthy rivalry, to allow rowers, coaches and parents to enjoy each other's company for this day at least. The J16 boy's four is a great example of co-operation, having members of Durham City, Durham School and St. Leonard's School Boat clubs in the crew.
The championships offer the opportunity for each region to compare rowers and coaching skills against each other and also, for the rowers themselves, offer an early step towards national recognition.
Team selection was based on the previous year's results and, for some crews, race offs were carried out on the wear in late March.
