FAMILY and friends of a Chester-le-Street community figure yesterday dedicated a lift to his memory.
Peter Scholey, who was treasurer with Chester-le-Street Community Association, died in December last year.
Yesterday, centre manager Margaret Edwards unveiled a plaque in his honour in a ceremony watched by his wife, Nora, and son, Andrew.
The £50,000 lift, with access for wheelchair-users, was paid for with a grant from the Community Fund.
Mrs Scholey, of Lumley, Chester-le-Street, said: "It is a really nice gesture and I am sure he would have really appreciated it.
"It is a nice thing to do and it will provide a lasting memory of him.
"He would have been very pleased."
Mr Scholey was treasurer with the association from 1997.
Mrs Edwards said: "He had a fun sense of humour and I am sure he would have been delighted with the dedication."
