A SUNDAY morning football league side had special reason to celebrate their cup final victory at the weekend.
Newton Aycliffe won the Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League First Division Cup on Sunday with a 5-1 win over Old Shildon and the young son of a former player who tragically died recently lifted the trophy.
In memory of Paul Stevens, son Ben Stevens collected the cup at Spennymoor United's Brewery Field ground following the emphatic and fitting win.
Ben tragically lost his dad earlier this year - and as a special mark of respect, Aycliffe allowed Ben to pick up the trophy.
His dad had scored in all the previous rounds of the competition, including two quarter-final goals and one in the semis.
"It was a special moment," said manager Brian Scaife.
Dave Muir, a very close friend of Paul for many years and his striking partner - they scored a boat load of goals between down the years - fittingly scored two goals in the final.
Stuart Owens gave Aycliffe a first half lead before Ian Maddison equalised from the spot just before half-time.
Strikers Muir and Johnny Craig made it 3-1 before an own goal and another strike by Muir completed the win.
Brian added: "We've won trophies over the years, but none as special as this one, especially after the year we had.
"There was a few tears when Ben lifted the cup - it was special."
