CHURCH leaders are hoping to provide a youth centre to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Elm Ridge Methodist Church has submitted plans to the borough council for the change-of-use of vacant premises in the Mowden shopping parade, Darlington.
The Reverend Philip Clarke said: "We do a lot of youth and children's work here already, and we would like to see that develop. We are having a meeting of the church council next week to get its views."
The church is looking for partners in the project and has consulted with schools and community groups.
Phil Smith, the church's youth worker, said: "We see a lot of things happening in the community; young people hanging around and anti-social behaviour.
"We want to do something about that. We want to provide the kids with somewhere safe to meet their friends and perhaps play sports or games."
The parade has become a focal point for youngsters, and residents have made complaints to police about their behaviour.
Recent police operations have helped reduce the concerns.
