Wearside League: Stokesley SC will play Boldon CA in the final of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup following two sharply contrasting semi finals.
Whereas the Teessiders won through on penalties following a goal-less draw, Boldon were involved in a ten-goal thriller.
Neither Stokesley nor their rivals for the championship Birtley Town managed to score during 120 minutes and after both sides had each converted five penalties, Stokesley eventually celebrated, winning 6-5.
Boldon defeated Gateshead Reserves 6-4 in a game filled with tension. The home side looked to be well on their way into the final when they led 4-1 at half time with a brilliant hat-trick from Craig Rolfe and one goal by Lee Seff.
Brian Gibb was the visitors' only first-half scorer and even when Dean Gate made it 4-2, Boldon were comfortable. They went 6-2 up as Seff and Rolfe again found the net but in a pulsating finale Gateshead pulled back to 6-4 with goals from John Faucher and Paul Hogg.
There was still time for Keith Mason to be sent off for a handling offence and for Brian Gibb to miss a 70th-minute penalty for Gateshead.
North Shields extended their lead at the top of the table to eight points and have a game in hand on nearest challengers Birtley Town.
The Robins easily saw off Ferryhill Athletic 6-0 although it was not until the last half hour that they converted their chances.
Roy Gordon and Andy Stokes put them two goals up by the 31st minute but Ferryhill battled away to keep the home side at bay until the hour when Paul Hogg added a third goal.
Three goals in ten minutes just before the end from Stokes, Andy Hay and Stephen Hamil (pen) helped to improve Shields' goal difference.
Cleadon SC are third but are out of the race. They maintained their ambitions to finish in the top four with victory at New Marske where Derek Newton scored the only goal.
Harton and Westoe also won by a 1-0 margin, defeating Annfield Plain courtesy of Scott Tooley who found the net on the stroke of half time.
Wolviston suffered a 4-1 reverse at Windscale where they fielded a severely weakened line-up. In addition, they had Emrys Sheldon taken to hospital in the 20th minute with injuries to his ribs.
Peter O'Donnell (2), Howard Kirkbride and Mark Young netted for the Cumbrians with Paul Griffith Wolviston's only scorer.
Washington Nissan UK are still bottom after going down 2-1 to Whitehaven.
Stephen Pickersgill had Nissan ahead at the halfway stage and after Carl McGrady's equaliser, the visitors took the points with an 85th-minute strike from Craig Robson.
