CONCERNS have been expressed by residents about the state of a former petrol station in Darlington town centre, which they say is attracting drug users and drunks.
Needles, empty cider bottles and rubbish have been dumped behind the former Shell garage, in Yarm Road, according to residents.
One man, who lives in nearby Melland Street, said the site was an appalling eye- sore.
"It is a magnet for drug addicts, youths and alcoholics. I've even seen people urinating there," he said.
"There are lots of empty bottles of white cider and even used needles. It's disgusting.
"The site is on one of the main roads into town and next door to our Civic Theatre, which is supposed to be a prestigious attraction. What must people think," he said.
Complaints have been made to Darlington Borough Council's environmental department about the site.
A council spokesman said that inquiries into the problem would be made this week.
Inspector Brian Maudling, of Darlington police, said the local beat officer would look into the problem.
"If people are using the spot for drug taking, then used needles can be a great health risk, particularly for youths gathering there," he said.
"Officers will keep an eye on it and if there are any problems we will communicate with the council about them."
