A FULL-SIZED reproduction of a Second World War Spitfire could soon be in place on a North-East roundabout.
Several organisations in Thornaby, near Stockton, have come together to try to secure lottery funding for the plane.
The idea is to commemorate the RAF pilots who flew from an aerodrome that was once in the town.
Stockton Borough Council has joined the Remembering Thornaby group and Thornaby Town Council to bid for money from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The borough council will be able to work on security and safety features, road and planning regulations.
The plane would be build by GB Replicas, of Great Yarmouth, and would cost about £50,000, which would include installation.
It would be on one of the main roundabouts leading into Thornaby.
Steve Nelson, of Stockton Borough Council said: "We are always looking for ways to improve the urban environment and are happy to lend our full support to the Remembering Thornaby group in their endeavours to secure the funding for the replica Spitfire.
"We have consulted widely, including with Thornaby Town Council, who agree that this would be not only a great visual feature for the town, but a wonderful way of remembering Thornaby's part in the Second World War."
