An animal charity is appealing for expert help to cure what it thinks could be the world's most miserable moggy.
Mr Snugs, a depressed six-year-old black-and-white cat, has resisted all attempts to rid him of his sorrowful demeanour.
The forlorn feline has a deep mistrust of people and mopes about his foster home, cowering in corners and shunning human contact.
After weeks of unsuccessfully trying to find a permanent home, the Aristocat Rescue charity is seeking professional advice.
Foster-parent Julie Blakey, who is looking after Mr Snugs at her home in Bishopton, near Darlington, said: "He's the world's saddest cat. He's very depressed and withdrawn into himself.
"There's nothing behind his eyes. It sounds a silly thing to say, but he seems to have lost his soul and we're at a loss."
Mr Snugs was a stray for four years before being taken in by a kindly woman who fed him and kept and eye on him.
Mrs Blakey said: "He was ever so friendly with her and I think she's possibly the only human he's ever trusted after living rough for so long. Having lost that contact with her he's just given up all hope."
The charity has tried various herbal remedies to cure Mr Snugs, but nothing has worked.
As a last resort, staff are appealing for a professional animal behaviourist or herbalist to volunteer their services and have a look at the crestfallen cat.
