A MAN alleges he was threatened opposite a former filling station that has become a den for drug users.
As reported in yesterday's edition of The Northern Echo, people have complained that hypodermic needles, empty cider bottles and other rubbish have been dumped at the former Shell garage site, in Yarm Road, Darlington.
Now, a man in his 40s, who does not wish to be named, says he was threatened by a man who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, while he was waiting at a bus stop opposite the former garage.
The man said: "It was 2.30pm last Tuesday, when this man started banging on the bus stand, then he looked at me and said 'that will be your head next time'.
"He then came toe-to-toe with me and threatened me again.
"He was obviously on something. I walked away. If this can happen in the afternoon, it is not safe around there."
Inspector Brian Maudling, of Darlington police, said that he was aware of the problems in the area and that beat officers would be checking the garage site to ensure it was secure.
The person who threatened the man at the bus stop is described as being in his 20s and of slim build. He was about 5ft 8in, and had short, blond hair.
At the time he was wearing a grey Burberry cap, white training shoes, blue jeans and a light blue anorak.
The man also had a ring through one eyebrow.
Anyone with information or who thinks they might know the man is asked to call police on (01325) 467681.
