A Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has won its plea for extra funds after warnings that it was in danger of folding.
Kirkbymoorside Town Council has agreed to double its help to Ryedale CAB after pleas from Councillor Susan Barr.
She said the current grant of £200 from the council was "derisory" and that people from Kirkbymoorside benefitted even if they had to contact CAB offices at Malton and Norton.
She said that the CAB helped people to claim benefits which many did not know they were entitled to. "That money in turn is re-spent in our community," she said.
The Mayor, Coun John Bowes, opposed the increase saying the town council could not afford to grant aid every organisation which applied for help.
But the council decided by a majority that they were increasing the grant to £400 on condition that the CAB ran an office at Kirkbymoorside Community Centre.
