PRIME Minister Tony Blair has invited Czech artist and University of Sunderland professor Sylva Petrova to a celebration of the expansion of the European Union.

Prof Petrova will be at the Foreign Office tomorrow to mark the inclusion of ten new members to the EU.

The Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia will join the EU on Saturday.

The British Government is inviting eminent figures from the new member states to the celebration in London.

Prof Petrova has spent years successfully supporting and promoting Czech glass.

She has written five books and more than one hundred essays on studio glass.

She left her position as chief curator of the National Museum, in Prague, to join the university in 1998.
