THE Bishop of Jarrow officially dedicated new visitor facilities and improvements to the space of worship at a Hartlepool church last night.
The Right Reverend John Pritchard led a service of dedication at St Hilda's Church, on the Headland.
In a nine-month project, information displays and improved lighting have been created at the 12th Century church.
The layout of the church has also been improved, with better access, the installation of a new nave altar and nave cross, and the restoration of the Victorian church furniture.
Thanks to the sensitive use of displays, computer-generated images and interactive touch-screens, visitors can learn about the church's history and its important role in the modern community.
The project has been funded with £488,000 from the North Hartlepool Partnership and an additional £30,000 has come from St Hilda's congregation.
The Reverend Jonathan Goode, vicar of St Hilda's, said: "The history of St Hilda's reflects the many different stages in the development of the Hartlepool community over the centuries.
"These new facilities will help people understand and enjoy that rich history and celebrate the church's important role both in the present and in the future."
The church is open from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and is staffed by church volunteers. Admission is free.
