BUILDERS downed tools yesterday to remember those who have lost their lives in the construction industry.
More than 100 workers from contractor Sir Robert McAlpine took time out from working on the Red Mall extension, at Gateshead MetroCentre, for a minute's silence.
They were joined by shopping centre staff for a service to mark Annual Workers' Memorial Day.
John Scott, the regional secretary of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians, also spoke of the need to address health and safety issues on building sites and ensure better safety.
