A MUSEUM dedicated to the region's rail heritage re-opens next week after a rebuilding programme.
The Stephenson Railway Museum, in West Chirton, North Shields, North Tyneside, will hold a gala day on Monday to unveil its facilities.
The refurbishment was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Clore Duffield Foundation, Tyne & Wear Museums Business Partners, North Tyneside Council and Tyne & Wear Museums.
The museum was named after George and Robert Stephenson, who pioneered the steam railway. George Stephenson lived in what is now North Tyneside from 1802 to 1823, and Robert was born in North Tyneside in 1803.
The displays include the Stephenson locomotive Billy, built in 1826 and believed to be one of the world's oldest locomotives.
To celebrate the relaunch there will be a bouncy castle, face painting and a soft play area for younger children.
Admission is free. For details, call 0191-200 7146.
