ALASTAIR BALLS has been appointed chairman of the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative, it was announced last night.
He replaces Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, who stands down after five years.
Sir Ian will leave the post because of increased work commitments.
The culture10 campaign seeks to expand on developments carried out in Newcastle and Gateshead for its failed bid to become European Capital of Culture 2008.
Mr Balls said: "Ian has done a tremendous job for Newcastle Gateshead.
"The area is a much bigger and better place to live, work and visit now."
