A MAN was taken to hospital after he was shot in the stomach with a baton round during an armed siege yesterday.
Firearms officers were called to Sandringham Road, Gosforth, Newcastle, after reports that another man had been threatened with a firearm.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said that during the incident, an officer shot the man in the stomach with a plastic baton round.
The 54-year-old man, who suffered bruising, was later released from Newcastle General Hospital and is under arrest at a Tyneside police station.
The matter has been referred to the independent Police Complaints Commission, which is being asked to supervise an inquiry.
