PEOPLE living in Ferryhill will be consulted on plans for the town before they are submitted for final approval.
Ferryhill Town Council says it wants to ensure the area's local development framework reflects the needs and aspirations of townspeople as much as possible.
As a result, it has developed a draft town plan for submission to Sedgefield Borough Council.
But before it is developed to its final format, consultation will take place with the people of Ferryhill.
Council executive officer Jamie Corrigan said: "Every resident in Ferryhill will be delivered a summary copy of the draft proposals, together with a questionnaire, in early May in order that everyone has an opportunity to air their views.
"Many groups in the town will also be asked for their views."
After receiving all the responses, the draft plan may be amended.
It will then be subject to discussion with a number of focus groups made up of volunteers who respond to the questionnaire.
Details of a final draft submission will be publicised before it is formally submitted, following consideration of any final representations which may be made.
Mr Corrigan said: "It is hoped that the new local plan can encourage the future prosperity of the town and ensure that it continues to develop in the future."
