RESIDENTS in two towns have been examining plans to tackle traffic congestion.

The multi-million pound proposals will restructure the traffic system in Malton and Norton.

The plans will see parts of Malton market place pedestrianised and heavy lorries banned from Castlegate - the main route into the towns from the A64.

An alternative route for drivers trying to get to Norton would be provided to reduce congestion at the notorious bottlenecks of Butcher Corner and Norton level crossing.

Schemes to improve road safety for cyclists and pedestrians and to curb speeding would also be introduced.

Stuart Hurst, group engineer with responsibility for transportation projects for North Yorkshire County Council, said: "I believe the communities of the two towns will sign up to the strategy. There will be full consultation because we want to get the right quality of improvements.

"The big challenge is putting together the pack- age of improvements."

The county council has earmarked £250,000 in this financial year for some improvements, with another £250,000 next year. The authority, said Mr Hurst, had £1m-worth of expenditure planned.

Matthew Steele, of Mouchel Parkman, the county council's agents, said there were several issues affecting both towns.

"There is conflict between on-street and off-street parking policies and a lack of parking dedicated to residents and commuters," he said.
