THE first parents have graduated from a scheme designed to boost their qualifications.
Sure Start Stanley, in partnership with Derwentside Training, is employing a tutor to work with 35 parents.
A free creche ensures that people with young children are able to get back into the classroom.
After a series of lessons, the parents sit Adult National Tests in English and maths up to GCSE standard.
The exams are offered on-line and taken in the Sure Start Centre, currently based in a temporary facility in Joicey Gardens, Stanley, while work on a purpose-built £1m town centre base is completed.
Kelly Cockburn, a mother on a two-year career break, and part-time childminder Nadeen Lister were the first two successful parents through the scheme.
Ms Cockburn, who is now studying a computer course, said: "This project has enabled me to build up my self confidence and gain qualifications while caring for my family.
"I have not attended any courses since leaving school, but here I have been able to build confidence in my ability."
The scheme aims to provide a flexible learning environment for mothers and fathers to brush up on English and maths.
Ms Lister said: "Online testing gives you an immediate pass or fail within two minutes of completion.
"I think it is a new and interesting way to learn at your own pace, with a personal tutor for immediate support."
Parents interested in joining the course should contact Lynne Bell on (01207) 232048.
