SOME of the world's leading photographers will bring the fruits of their experience to a new centre in the North-East.
The International Photography Research Centre, which is being set up at the University of Sunderland, will be a hotbed for top students and photographers.
It is backed by Arts Council England, and forms part of a long-term strategy to enhance the university's reputation for photography.
The project has recently been boosted by an £800,000 EU grant.
Phase one involves a partnership between Arts Council England, Sunderland, five other universities and galleries in Europe, and one in Asia.
Work from the UK, Germany, Spain, Finland, Slovakia, Holland and Bangladesh will form the starting point for the research centre, where an archive website will open to the public soon.
Photographers will be capturing images that will help to create a new cultural map of Europe.
Their work will be shown at an exhibition at Sunderland's Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in September next year.
The university will hold an international contemporary photography conference at the same time.
