THE Developing World is often the beneficiary when youngsters are asked to choose a cause to support with projects at school, but pupils in Richmond decided to look closer to home.
At a recent student council meeting, year eight children from Richmond School decided to ask the town's mayor if there was anything they could do for the town.
Councillor Stuart Parsons suggested the 12 and 13-year-olds tidy up the town's Temple Gardens.
The students began helping out by clearing weeds and bracken.
"This project will hopefully grow as the students progress through the school," said teacher Nigel Wilford.
"What is really good about it is they can see what a positive impact they are having on their community and its surrounding area.
"Richmond is a beautiful place and the students value that, but they also want to increase the opportunities to enjoy Richmond at its best."
Future projects may include establishing wildlife habitats and the restoration of some of the dry-stone walls.
