FORMER headteacher and Durham City MP Gerry Steinberg was back at school yesterday.
He visited St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School and Laurel Avenue Primary School, in Gilesgate, Durham, as part of a global campaign to make education available to all.
St Joseph's deputy headteacher, Catherine Craig, said: "It was a very successful visit and he was able to answer questions at a level all children could understand.
"He raised their awareness of the role of an MP, and it raised their self-esteem to have such an important visitor.
"He was able to explain who he is and what he does, and the children were able to relate it to their lives.
"It was exciting for them to see a new face and relate their position in school to the bigger picture. It helps develop their understanding of citizenship."
