MORE than 500 youngsters are taking part in an initiative aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy.
The 11 and 12-year-olds from east Cleveland and South Tyneside will be involved in a Government energy scheme, called The Renewable Energy School Trial (Rest), which will raise awareness of the importance of using renewable energy.
A website will be at the heart of the scheme, where schools can pool information and ideas about renewable energy.
The project, which has backing from the North-East Renewable Energy Group and the Environment Agency, will be monitored to see if it can be used in other parts of the UK.
Dr Charlotte Nuttall, from TNEI services, which is managing the scheme, said: "This is an exciting project that gives the North-East a chance to provide a lead for the UK."
Carmel Corcoran, energy advisor for Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, said: "We're really pleased with the website and the important role that it will play in teaching our future decision-makers about renewable energy."
