STUDENTS from the North-East have been battling it out for a place in the national finals of a construction skills competition.
They were set tasks in trades including bricklaying, joinery and plumbing for the regional Skillbuild heats.
It was held at New College Durham and involved students from 13 colleges in the North-East. The idea was to promote excellence among craftspeople.
The winners, who will go on to the final at Taunton, in Somerset, were:
Bricklaying - seniors Stephen Weston, City of Sunderland College; juniors Gary Kirby, City of Sunderland College.
Painting and decorating - seniors David Edson; juniors Robert Martindale, both New College Durham.
Carpentry - David King, Redcar and Cleveland College.
Joinery - William Allison, Darlington College of Technology.
Plastering - Steven Barnes, Northumberland College.
Wall and floor tiling - Chris Maddison, Northumberland College.
