NORTH Ormesby enjoyed a spring clean-up thanks to its residents and schoolchildren.

It was funded by the local neighbourhood management project and organised by environmental organisation Groundwork South Tees.

The clean-up began in the market place where the team collected litter helped by volunteers and community groups.

It was then gathered and weighed on giant scales. There were prizes for the most prolific litter collector.

Pupils from North Ormesby and St Alphonsus primary schools were also involved in workshops, creating art from recycled materials provided by Percy, a local charity which collects re-usable materials from local businesses.

They then watched a play called You're Rubbish, presented by Momo Theatre, that was also seen later in the day by volunteers and community groups at North Ormesby Youth and Community Centre.

Local people and schools were also presented with a litter pick pack containing all the information and equipment needed to make it a regular community activity.

David Francis, North Ormesby's neighbourhood manager, said litter had been a longstanding concern for people living in the area.

The clean-up had helped to encourage a greater understanding among local people and children.
