A COLOURFUL mosaic, designed by people with learning disabilities, reflects the kind of experiences they hope a new centre will help them enjoy.

North Yorkshire County Council is to transform the Ashbank Day Centre, in Northallerton, constructing a new building and developing services tailored to the users' requests.

As part of the project, Thirsk-based Rural Arts and staff from County Hall also invited them to suggest ideas for the mosaic to of activities they hope will become a regular part of their day.

Meetings with friends, trips to the pub and out and about in North Yorkshire, as well as a game of dominoes, are all represented on the finished piece, which was presented to the Richmond and Hambleton Partnership Board.

"This scheme will offer users the possibilities which we often take for granted, such as going on outings, to the pub or the corner shop," said care locality manager Mike O'Neil.

"The mosaic clearly shows the type of services users want, and we are as excited as they are that we will be able to make it come to life."
