RUGBY World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson has become an ambassador for a children's charity.
The Newcastle Falcons' fly half, who sealed England's victory against Australia, will support the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in its fundraising and help promote its work.
Yesterday, on the charity's annual Children's Day, he marked his new role by visiting the NSPCC's Brighton Grove centre, Newcastle, which helps abused children.
Jonny said: "I support the NSPCC because of the work they do to help children who have suffered terrible abuse and harm.
"I had a very happy childhood and I believe a loving and happy childhood is a good foundation for a successful and fulfilled life.
"It is a real tragedy that there are many children whose lives are torn apart by abuse and cruelty. We all have a responsibility to do all we can to help children.
"I fully support the NSPCC's Full Stop campaign to end cruelty to children."
The charity's director, Mary Marsh, said: "It is wonderful that someone who is both a local and national hero is supporting the NSPCC in this way. ''
* Pop singer Kylie Minogue was the charity's first ambassador last year.
