THE results of a series of Bank Holiday spot checks on caravans defy belief according to police.
Eighty-four caravans were stopped and checked in the York area over the weekend.
In the first series of checks, 58 caravans were stopped. Ten were immediately ordered off the road - seven for being too heavy and three for having safety defects such as unroadworthy tyres.
In the second round of checks 26 caravans were stopped. Three were ordered off the road - one for being too heavy and two for having safety defects.
Sgt Ian Butler, from the central area road policing group in North Yorkshire, said: "This simply isn't good enough.
"Overweight caravans can be dangerous and difficult to control and it defies belief that people are happy to take their families off on holiday in vehicles with unroadworthy tyres or lights.
"North Yorkshire Police take this situation seriously and will continue to take firm action against any road users who jeopardise the safety of other people."
