Lumley Ladies: Lumley enjoyed mixed fortunes after sending six teams to compete in different age group categories at the first major festival of the summer, at York.

Teams from across the North took part in the tournament, played in blistering spring sunshine on Bank Holiday Sunday, staged by the Wigginton Grasshoppers club.

Lumley's seniors, recently crowned Women's Northern League Division Two champions, added the open age group title at York to their roll of honour.

But it was only after a narrow sudden-death penalty shoot-out victory, following a 1-1 draw after extra-time in the final, against South Durham Royals 'A' team.

Jemma Dinning was the unlikely hero in goal, as the forward donned the gloves as a stand-in for the final, saving twice in the shoot-out, while full-back Emma Nicholson scored the winning spot kick.

But Lumley Under-12s suffered the opposite fate, losing on penalties to Rotherham United following a 0-0 draw in their final.

Lumley under-14s just missed out on a place in their final, losing 1-0 to a last minute Sheffield Wednesday goal in extra-time of their semi-final.

Sheffield Wednesday also put paid to Lumley Under-10s' hopes, following a great run of results which brought four wins from their previous five games.

The young Owls proved too strong in the final, winning 2-0.

Lumley hope to add regional honours this weekend with Under-12s, 13s and 14s all taking part in their Tyne-Tees League age group cup finals, at Northern League Billingham Town's Bedford Terrace ground, on Sunday.

Spraire Lasses

Spraire Lasses made a positive start to their match at Middlesbrough with Beth Weller capitalising on an error by the Boro goalkeeper and scoring in the opening minutes. Spraire Lasses dominated much of the play only for Middlesbrough to score the equaliser and to prevent the Lasses scoring further goals. Final score was 1-1.

Playing at Newcastle, Spraire Lasses found themselves 1-0 down after two minutes. They fought back well, however, to go 3-2 down at the interval. Becks Webber and Anna Young scored the goals.

An organised defence and several outstanding saves from goalkeeper Claire Shiels prevented Newcastle finding the net again. Nicola Hookway received the manager's merit award.
