TWO North-East councils have been given Government approval to debate transferring their properties to housing associations.
Sedgefield Borough and Teesdale District Councils will now discuss Large Scale Voluntary Transfer (LSVT) schemes with their tenants.
In Sedgefield, tenants will be asked if they want the scheme to go ahead. A ballot is expected in April next year. A date for a ballot in Teesdale has yet to be set.
If accepted, the councils will be able to get money to upgrade houses to meet the Government's decent homes standard.
Proposals for Sedgefield are more advanced than Teesdale, and Sedgefield Borough Council wants to consult with tenants about the plans so they understand what is involved.
Council leader Bob Fleming said: "This is a significant milestone in our efforts to secure the necessary investment needed to deliver the needs and aspirations of our tenants."
Councillor Bill Waters, the cabinet member with responsibility for housing, said: "I believe it provides an excellent opportunity to meet tenant aspirations, improve the environment and the quality of rented housing available in Sedgefield.
"We will continue to work with our tenants to achieve the full potential."
Priority Estates Project has been appointed to work with Sedgefield tenants through the transfer process.
It will offer tenants support and independent advice, available on (0800) 243082.
