At Hull Ice Arena over three days this Bank Holiday weekend was the 10th anniversary Junior Inter-Conference championship tournament. Northern Conference join Midlands, South East and South West and play at four age levels, U11, U13, U15 and U17.
North Conference U11 and U13 squads reached the finals of their respective events and U15 and U17 teams were involved in third/fourth place play-offs.
North U13 defeated Midlands 7-4 to win their event in an entertaining match. North led 2-0 after six minutes which included a Callum Watson strike and the Whitley Bay youngster added his second and North's fourth at 15.37 for a 4-2 lead. Sunderland's Nathan Salem scored a fifth as North's lead went to 6-2 before Midlands cut the deficit with two goals. The win was completed by a seventh goal in the 36th minute.
It was sweet revenge for North who lost 3-1 to Midlands after taking a 1-0 lead. the second game was against South East which was won 3-0. Sunderland's Grant Sharp struck at 11.39 to give North a 2-0 opening period lead. The final goal came at 31.50 to complete the victory. Sharp's Sunderland team mate Thomas Murdy had an 11-shot shut-out.
South West went the same way in the final round robin match losing 3-1. Sharp put North on the way with a first minute strike. South West equalised before North regained the lead in the final minute of the first period. Salem wrapped up the win with a goal at 37.24.
North U11s, winners of the event 12 months ago, reached the final again this season. North faced Midlands and suffered a 6-2 defeat. Midlands went two up inside three minutes and North plugged away and tied the scores as Sunderland's Jack Watkins hit both goals at 08.14 and 11.27.
Midlands replied to go 4-2 ahead four minutes later and the win was assured with two late strikes.
The same two teams met in North U11s' opening game. Midlands ran out 4-1 winners after North took a first minute lead.
South East were next up for North and were on the receiving end of a 5-1 defeat. Watkins and fellow Sunderland colleague Alex Lawson put North 2-0 ahead with goals in the space of a minute. The lead was stretched to 3-0 in the 22nd minute. Watkins completed his hat-trick with a brace of goals, the first on the powerplay at 27.07 and another six minutes later. South East hit their consolation goal after 35.45.
North's final round robin match was against South West which North won by a 5-2 margin. It was all over by the end of the first period as North eased into a 3-0 advantage. Watkins opened the scoring at 06.40 and Lawson added a second a couple of minutes later, the third followed in the 14th minute.
South West were short-handed at 30.26 when they opened their account. Lawson restored the three-goal lead at 36.56 and a fifth goal came two minutes later. In the final minute South West added their second.
North U15s were beaten 4-3 after sudden death overtime in the third/fourth place play-offs against South East. North found themselves trailing 0-2 after nine minutes and came back to 3-2 ahead. The first struck at 18.09 and Whitley's Jamie Tinsley netted the equaliser at 20.11.
A powerplay goal in the 38th minute gave North a 3-2 lead with only 39 seconds remaining. South East struck a timely third to take the game into overtime.
Three minutes into the five of sudden death overtime South East got the important winner.
There was not much to choose between North and Midlands in the opening game. Midlands U15s scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute.
South East were 3-1 winners against North and went 2-0 up in the first nine minutes. A third followed in the 18th minute and North's lone reply was scored at 34.42.
South West were well on top in their game against North when they went 3-0 ahead by 10.53 and a fourth came in the sixth minute of the second period, two of the goals scored on the powerplay. The fifth was struck at 25.13.
In a 5-1 defeat North's lone reply was on the powerplay at 37.46.
North U17s did not have the best of tournaments in the first year of this age group at the tournament. North finished fourth and failed to find the net.
The third/fourth play-off game against South West was decided by a penalty shoot-out. North put plenty of pressure on South West's goal, but found the netminder in fine form. Overtime followed and no goals then five penalty shots from each side did not bring a goal and now meant sudden death shoot-out.
North missed the first but South West converted theirs for victory.
Midlands were North's first opponents and won 3-0 in a pretty one-sided encounter on Saturday.
North were dealt a blow on Sunday when two players had to be sent home from the tournament after breaching disciplinary rules.
South East handed out a 3-0 loss to North with a goal in each of the periods. all of them coming on the powerplay.
A close encounter against South West ended 0-0 as both netminders kept their game scoreless, the second game between the teams to fail to provide a goal in normal time.
