The Northern Echo Cup Final, Redcar Mackinlay P v Lingdale Tavern: Lingdale were looking to put the disappointment of lasy week's league cup final and two league defeats behind them.
They started the game well, making chances for the two Breckons at the front, but for the second final running they came up against an opposition goal keeper in fine form. Lingdale's full backs Hood and Brown kept the pacy wingers of Redcar at bay and were looking comfortable until a Redcar cross was deflected up and over the Lingdale back four and hit past keeper, Moore.Lingdale worked hard and made chances.
A ball first hit the post then Darcy headed against the crossbar and the Redcar keeper made two good stops from shots by Thompson, Lingdale unlucky to be a goal down at the break.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Lingdale were awarded a penalty but Breckons shot was superbly saved. This rocked Lingdale and minutes later Redcar increased their lead when the Lingdale defence failed to clear.
A Shane Breckon goal from the edge of the box seemed to put Lingdale back into the game. However the Redcar defence held firm enabling them to lift the cup and leave Lingdale disappointed again.
Lingdale were however crowned League Champions and picked themselves up for a gritty league performance the next day with a win over Grangetown, Shane Breckon scoring a hat trick. With still five league games to play Lingdale can be proud of their achievements this season.
League
Highland Laddie v Whitby Fishermen
Laddie began the stronger with Lawther's pacey runs causing the Whitby defence all kinds of problems and Combellack and Burns both going close to scoring early in the match.
As Whitby settled they began to press more and after good work down the left from Roldan, Wood went very close with his first time effort.
Then Draper blazed a shot just over the bar. In the Whitby goal Harland was standing firm and the game remained goalless at the break. The second half began with a more determined Whitby and on 50 minutes a through ball from Maxwell found Draper who coolly slotted past Bennett in the Laddie goal. This brought Laddie to life and further chances fell to Daynes, Neesam and Lawther but keeper Harland was playing a blinder to keep the shots out. On 70 minutes a Whitby corner saw them going further ahead and on course for victory. Combellack, however, had other ideas and when a Daynes cross was headed clear Combellack was there to fire past the keeper. With five minutes remaining Daynes and Burns combined well to set up Combellack who slotted home the equaliser. With both teams in with a shout for the League runners up spot a draw didn't help either of them.
Stakesby v Staithes Ath
After winning their first match of the season with a shock midweek victory over League Champions Lingdale Tavern, Stakesby were looking for more of the same. The game started scrappily on a boggy pitch, Staithes taking the lead when a cross was converted by Kevin Wood. Within minutes Arms had levelled when a long throw by Webster was handled in the area, Mike Headflam converting from the spot. As the game picked up speed Staithes went back in front after slack defending allowed Wood to score his second.
The second half saw Smith sent off a decision hitly disputed by the Stakesby team and the taem took some time to settle as the prtests continued. Ten minutes later Staithes went further ahead and Stakesby found themselves down to nine men when Usher was deemed to have brough down av Staithes striker. The penalty kock was converted by Armstrong, effectively sealing victory for Staithes.
