HUNDREDS of youngsters are gearing up for two football festivals this month.
Derwentside Leisure has organised two girls' football tournaments in a search for the best young players in the district.
Sports development officer Colin McBride said: "Our work in schools is paying dividends. More kids and young people are now attending courses outside school time.
"The structures are all in place and we have got the participation levels. Now it is about improving standards."
The first football competition, for under-14 girls, takes place in Stanley School of Technology, in Chester Road, Stanley, on Wednesday. More than 100 youngsters will be taking part.
On May 26, it is the turn of the under-12s, with teams representing eight primary schools already entered.
The event will take place at Burnhope Primary School, near Stanley, and will be the first football festival in the district to have an all-female team of officials.
"More girls' teams means they get the regular competition that they need," said Mr McBride.
The winners of both tournaments will receive their trophies from Stanley-born England under-19s goalkeeper Carly Telford, and will go on to represent Derwentside at the Durham County Youth Games, taking place at Maiden Castle in September.
"Carly has made it to the top without all the support that is available today," said Mr McBride.
The Kickstart course, starting on Wednesday, May 19, is an eight-week programme of football coaching for girls.
Anyone interested in joinning the course can contact the sports development team on (01207) 218528.
