AN annual swimathon that attracted 300 entrants has raised more than £5,000 for charity.
The event, which was held at Spennymoor Leisure Centre yesterday, has been running for more than 20 years and is organised by Rotary Clubs and Lions Clubs in south Durham.
This year's headline charity was The Children's Diabetic Insulin Pump Appeal, started by Dr Bill Lamb at Bishop Auckland Hospital.
Organiser Jeremy Edkins said: "In the past we have gone for two charities, but this year we thought it was such a worthwhile cause we decided to make it our only one."
Further money was raised for Darlington Memorial Hospital's heart unit and scores of other good causes, including churches and schools.
Those taking part were allowed to enter teams of up to six people.
Half the money raised from each team went to the insulin pump appeal, and half to the charity of the team's choice.
About 40 teams took part in the swimathon, which lasted all day.
Organisers estimate that after deducting the cost of hiring the pool, enough money will have been raised to purchase a complete insulin pump.
Mr Edkins said: "We had a great day.
"I think there were more than 300 people swimming and we have raised a guaranteed £5,000, with possibly more to come."
