TEESSIDE mothers are being encouraged by Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust to try breastfeeding as part of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week.
Breastfeeding benefits mothers by helping weight loss, helping the womb return to normal and reducing the risk of pre-menopausal breast and ovarian cancer.
It also benefits babies by providing nutrition and protecting against infections.
Sue Walton, health visitor for the trust, said: "There are proven benefits to breastfeeding for both mothers and babies. It is important that new mums and mums-to-be are aware of these benefits in order to make an informed choice about the way they choose to feed their baby."
Health visitors are organising an event for families to learn more about breastfeeding on Friday, between noon and 1.30pm, at the Fabian Road Clinic, Eston.
The Food for Life Breastfeeding Partnership is holding a Celebration of Breastfeeding today, at the TAD Centre, Ormesby Road, Middlesbrough, from 10am to 1pm.
