CHILDREN from a North-East hospital nursery are doing their bit to protect other youngsters from sunburn.
To mark Sun Awareness Week, children from the Playdays Day Nursery attached to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, wore bright yellow and blue sun hats.
The youngsters were joined by skin cancer nurse practitioner Jane Bond to help promote the sun awareness message and a new Kids Cook Quick poster.
This week, Cancer Research UK and Boots released the findings of a survey in which a third of parents admit their child has been sunburnt, despite most knowing that over-exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer.
The new poster, which is being sent to 19,000 nurseries, Boots pharmacies and all doctors' surgeries, is designed to warn parents and features a picture of two sunburnt children sitting on a beach. Parents are urged to seek shade, cover up their children with a hat, T-shirt and sunglasses and use a sunscreen that is factor 15 or higher.
