AN apprentice plumber is celebrating success in a national award scheme.
Adam Goodall, 18, of Brandon, was runner-up in the apprentice of the year awards run by the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE), the body for council workforces. He won £50 and was presented with a certificate.
Adam is on an apprentice scheme set up by Durham City Council and is learning his trade as a plumber and gas engineer working on the city's council houses.
The council reintroduced a small apprentice training scheme in 2002 to counteract the national shortage of skilled tradesmen.
The scheme has also won recognition from the APSE.
"Adam is the fruit of this scheme and has become a very good plumber/gas engineer,'' said a council spokesman.
"He is a fine worker and has picked up the skills very well indeed. We had no hesitation in putting him forward for the award.
"Adam is on a two-year apprenticeship and has six months to go. His recognition also brings kudos for the council's training scheme."
