THREE Darlington sixth form students learned about sports coaching during a four-day university course.
Lynsey Carveth, Tom Hughes and Justin Preston, from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, travelled to Loughborough University after being selected for the scheme by the Youth Sport Trust and Sport England.
They coached children in swimming and football and learned about team leadership, health and safety, child protection and social inclusion issues.
Lynsey, from Richmond, said: "The experience was really valuable. We learned a lot about coaching in the community and issues surrounding volunteering."
