PUPILS and teachers are set to walk across the top of Teesside's Transporter Bridge for charity.
Thirty children, aged between 12 and 16, and teachers from Huntcliffe Secondary School, Mill Lane, Saltburn, have signed up to take part in the Hospices over the Transporter Bridge 2004.
The money raised will go to the Teesside Hospice, Butterwick Hospice and other charities nominated by Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club, which organises the event.
As well as walking across the top walkway of the bridge, 165 feet above river level, this year the organisers are asking the participants to tie a yellow ribbon around the top of the bridge to help generate awareness of the hospice movement.
Due to maintenance on the bridge last year the event could not take place, but more than £40,000 was raised the previous two years.
A spokesperson from Teesside Hospice, which was established in 1982 to enhance the life of people suffering from life-limiting illnesses in the Teesside region, said: "Most people are surprised to learn that the hospice has annual running costs in excess of £1.6m. Forty two per cent of this is provided by local Primary Care Trusts, leaving approximately £2,600 a day to be raised from the hospice's own resources.
"The charge to take part is £5 per person and it is also hoped that participants will raise extra funds through sponsorship for the charities."
The event, which will take place on Saturday, June 12, will include bands, dancers and various stalls located at the foot of the bridge.
For registration forms, call the hospice on (01642) 355866 or the Butterwick Hospice on (01642) 624231.
