The Northern Runner Simmer Series of fell races opened with the Fox and Hounds Chase, which 55 runners completed.
The 8.8 mile race was won by Sean O'Grady of Loftus AC in 68.39. Peter Wilkin was the first Harrier to finish, in ninth place in 70.31, Stewart Mechie 16th in 78.46, Alan Somers 27th in 84.38, Caroline Pollard 32nd in 86.18, Alan Wikeley 33rd in 87.03, Hywel Smith 35th in 88.33, Cameron Choules 43rd in 98.30 and Steve Harrison 45th in 99.45 minutes. The men's team finished in second place.
A week later saw the start of the Harrogate and District Summer Road Race League at Skipton. Ian Fisher of Otley won the race, a distance of about five miles, in 26.17. Gary Dunn finished ninth in 29.02, Philip Utley 57th in 33.56, Hywel Smith 77th in 36.23, Alan Wikeley 97th in 37.56, Pat Kirby 120th in 39.10, Maureen Gibbs 135th in 40.53, Cath Lumb 154th in 42.48, just ahead of Sharon Keegan in 155th place in 42.51, Karen Hudson 159th in 43.13, Marian Codling 185th in 48.34 and Lydia Evitt 187th in 48.38. The club finished eighth out of 11 in the Main Team section, and it is to be hoped more runners will compete in the next fixture, at Nidd Valley on May 20, which is event five in the Club Championship.
