Tow Law Juniors: Tow Law Juniors clinched the Russell Foster Premier League Championship with a 2-1 victory in their final game at Washington Nissan.
There was a dreadful start for the Lawyers in a must-win match when after only three minutes their goalkeeper, William Bland failed to hold a long-range shot and the ball bounced kindly for Tom Donkin, who raced in a punished the error with a shot from eight yards.
Tow Law pressed hard for the equaliser but found Chris McVay in the home goal in outstanding form. However the visitors were eventually rewarded for the constant pressure after 35 minutes when Andrew Bonilla and Dwain Dobson wotked an opening to provide Adam Sullivan with the chance to shoot from the edge of the area and finally outwit McVay.
This inspired the Lawyers and they created shooting chances for Nicky Martin, Kevin Russell, Chris Wayman and John Wheatley but each time McVay was equal to the occasion. The home star then excelled himself when he produced a magnificent save to keep out a powerful free kick from Michael Coulthard.
David Murray and Lee Mott combined well to put Kevin Russell clear down the right, where, after cutting in, he cracked in a good shot but it just fizzed into the side netting. However, after 63 minutes, the deadlock was broken when David Curry and Michael Coulthard broke out of defence with an inter-passing movement, which ended when Coulthard cracked in a scorching, unstoppable shot from 30 yards.
Fittingly this was enough to land the championship and give the man of the match award to Michael Coulthard.
Bishop Auckland St Mary's
The only game that took place over the weekend saw the Under-14 team entertain Thornaby at home in a very good end of season encounter.
Thornaby eventually came out on top, winning 4-2 with the two St Mary's goals coming from man of the match Stephen Bland.
A meeting will be taking place this week with hopefully all 28 football coaches in attendance to discuss next season's requirements and the setting up of an Under-18 team to play next season to go along with the ten other teams that already exist.
