ACTOR Brian Blessed yesterday backed a campaign to save one of the region's smallest and most threatened creatures.
The water vole was once common along rivers and streams.
Over the past decade, its numbers have declined as farming methods affect its habitats.
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has made the protection of the creature a priority.
The organisation's president, Mr Blessed is heading the campaign. He said: "I want to do two things. Firstly, to make everyone aware that voles need our help, especially landowners who might be able to create some space for them.
"And secondly, to ask Yorkshire people to make a donation to help this work."
Water voles are easily identified and have small hidden ears, silky brown fur, blunt noses and short, furry tails.
To report water vole sightings or make a donation to the trust, call (01904) 659570.
