Stokesley SC require just one point from their last two games to finish runners-up to champions North Shields.
On Monday they not only gained three valuable points but also avenged a recent defeat by Boldon CA, who won the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup with a 5-2 victory at Stokesley.
After trailing to a goal by Craig Rolfe, Stokesley levelled through Craig Johnson before Anthony Sivills scored the winner.
On Wednesday, Stokesley were held to a goal-less draw by Darlington RA and go into tomorrow's penultimate game of the season against North Shields at Ralph Gardner Park just a point behind second-placed Birtley Town but with an infinitely better goals difference.
"We are disappointed to have missed out on the championship but one point from the last six will see us end second so we have still had a good season," said secretary Peter Grainge.
After winning the North Riding County Cup, Stokesley lost out in the finals of the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and the Sunderland Shipowners' Cup but have a chance to gain silverware on Monday night when they travel to Birtley Town in the final of the League Cup (6.30pm).
Birtley meanwhile completed their league programme defeating Ferryhill Athletic 5-1 on Monday when Paul Richardson rifled a hat-trick and other goals flowed from Ross Preston and Neil Blue. Michael Weston equalised for Ferryhill who end the season second from the basement, three points better off than Washington Nissan UK.
After scoring six times last Saturday, Wolviston defeated Harton and Westoe 3-0 in their midweek fixture. David Dowd bagged a brace of goals and Paul Edwards also found the net.
New Marske signed off with a 3-1 defeat at Whitehaven despite scoring first.
John Murphy, Barry Fowler (pen) and Jonathan Wright replied for the Cumbrians.
