Steels Social Club are the Premier Division Champions for the second year running and they finished unbeaten.
They won 6-2 at home against Darlington Croft who are relegated. Steels were determined to keep their unbeaten record and opened with attacking football and led 5-0 at the interval courtesy of goals from Gary Cook (2), Martin Henderson, Joe Clark, Davy Tate. Michael Carroll scored a sixth shortly after the restart. Ferryhill Greyhound won 4-1 away to the Lord Seaham who are also relegated. Ferryhill were determined to win this game in order to finish runners-up and they did it in fine style scoring two goals in each half. Hero of the match was Alan Shoulder who scored a hat-trick, Willie Taylor scored one. In Division I, Barnard Castle Glaxo ended third and are promoted. They drew 2-2 away to Grindon Broadway to end their promotion bid. Grindon opened the scoring but Alan Gates levelled with a spectacular header to make it 1-1 at the interval. After the restart the Castle went into a 2-1 lead when Geoff White found the net with a volley from 30 yards. In the closing minutes Grindon equalised but the Castle's defence had no problems in playing out time.
In Division II, Billingham Town turned in a fantastic performance to win 3-2 away to fifth placed Spring Gardens in their fight to escape relegation. They led 1-0 at the interval courtesy of a Tony Screen goal. Steve Robinson levelled shortly after the restart but Billingham came back strongly to score and regain their lead. Mick Griffiths slotted home a spot-kick to put Spring Gardens back on level terms but in a grandstand finish Billingham forced their way through the defence to grab the winner and keep their escape hopes alive.
Red House made sure of promotion along with Wynyard Veterans by winning 5-0 at home against Darlington Railway who are now relegated along with the Willow Pond. It is now a question of who will be the champions. Red House play Hylton Castle away and must win by at least 3-0 and hope Wynyard Vets lost 3-0 away to Hebburn to be champions, Hylton Castle must win to gain promotion at the expense of Gateshead. The Rams Head who have had a fluctuating season lost 3-1 at home to Hebburn and will probably finish in the top six.
In Division III the promotion issue is still undecided, there being four teams still involved.
Crook Town kept their hopes alive by winning 6-2 at home to West Cornforth. The first half ended 1-1 but the restart saw Crook piling on the pressure and going 5-1 up before running out 6-2 winners. Crook's marksmen were David Neil with a hat-trick, while Kevin Sanderson, Kevin Smith and Trevor Howarth hit one apiece. Crook's last game is away to Houghton Cricket club, a win would ensure them of promotion, a draw or a loss could prove disastrous. Hed-Deneside drew 2-2 at home to Houghton Cricket Club and still have a chance of promotion.
British Telecom, despite only drawing 0-0 at home to Hartlepool RNC, also have a good chance of promotion as their last two games are at home to the Toll Bar and Regency Windows who are fourth and third from bottom.
In Division IV, Peterlee look good to complete the double, Division IV champions and the Billy Lorraine Cup winners when they play Trimdon Vets in the final. Trimdon Vets defeated the Halfway House 2-0 in the semi-final. The Halfway House had an unfortunate start, their keeper fumbling the ball and giving away the opening goal after five minutes. Despite all their attacking efforts Trimdon's defence held rock solid and a further Trimdon goal settled the issue.
