THE bravery and optimism of a young cancer victim inspired friends and colleagues at a supermarket to raise thousands of pounds in his memory.
Tim Jones, of Bishop Auckland, died in April, aged 20, after a 15-month battle against cancer.
Before his death Mr Jones spoke to his family and colleagues at the town's Morrison's store, where he worked for four years, about helping the teenage cancer unit at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
He hoped to run fundraising activities to buy games and DVDs for the ward that cared for him during treatment for bone cancer and secondary lung cancer.
Colleagues have put his fundraising plans into action and raised £3,550 with a tombola, raffles, collection buckets and a charity night at the Park Head Hotel, Coundon.
A basket of gifts was also given to the ward, and his family, friends and girlfriend Michelle Cooper raised £1,000 in lieu of flowers.
Mr Jones' mother, Margaret, who also works at the supermarket, said: "He would be thrilled to see the RVI supported in his memory.
"He made good friends on the unit.
"The staff were all a wonderful support, and he knew the patients would appreciate things to pass the time away in more comfort."
His father, Ray, said: "He was a caring, laid-back lad who never dwelled on his illness, he would have wanted to give something back for the support and care he received."
