THERE is nothing unusual about two mayors attending the same event.
But the dignitaries who attended a junior golf competition Newton Aycliffe this week are husband and wife.
It is believed to be the first time a married couple have been mayors of two different local authorities at the same time.
Councillor George Gray is coming to the end of his term as Mayor of Sedgefield borough, handing over the chains of office next Friday.
His wife, Councillor Maude Gray, was installed as Mayor of Great Aycliffe this week and for nine days they will both head their respective authorities.
Mr Gray said: "It's never happened before, as far as I know, and I think it's great.
"I was made mayor because someone was not re-elected, and Maude was already a deputy mayor, so I knew we would overlap. It is only for a few days, but I think it is unique."
A total of 27 children from the Sedgefield borough took part in the golf competition, the first of its kind.
Great Aycliffe Town Council provided the Oakleaf Golf Complex for the competition, and parish councils in the borough paid for golf balls, tees and other equipment needed by the youngsters.
The girls' competition was won by Charlotte Taylor, and the boys' winner was Michael Evans, both from Greenfield School, Newton Aycliffe.
Mrs Gray will be at the school assembly on Monday to present the prizes.
